Your exhaust system protects both you and our natural environment from the harmful emissions produced by your diesel engine. Your exhaust system and its incorporated after-treatment components manage NOx production, carbon, and soot production, amongst other harmful outputs.
Your exhaust system has a variety of after-treatment components built into it. They are as follows: Your Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) system, a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF), an SCR Catalyst, and a DOC Catalyst. All of these components are designed to either capture, reduce, or transform the emissions produced by your diesel engine. All of these components need to be repaired and maintained on a regular basis. Take your DPF as an example. Unlike the others, it stores carbon and soot and, as such, can only operate for a finite period of time. This means it must be cleaned out, or in other words, regenerated once every few years.
Exhaust leaks are a lot more dangerous than you may think. Most presume exhaust leaks are simply a loud annoyance, but in reality, they can put you and your passengers at risk! Exhaust tubing is responsible for more than just facilitating after-treatment and sound suppression. As a matter of fact, it’s also responsible for moving emissions away from your heavy-duty truck! If there’s a hole in your exhaust tubing, that carbon may escape through it and enter your passenger compartment. This can have serious health impacts on you and your passengers.
