Bearings and Races for Heavy-Duty Trailers

Bearings are designed to allow your wheels to spin without creating a lot of friction. To facilitate this frictionless movement, they are greased and roll against a metal race. Races are smooth, cylindrical pieces of metal that keep your bearing in one place. Over time, both your bearings and races will need to be replaced. At DT Services, we have the tools and equipment required to perform this service. We’ve got race pullers, grease packers, and an inventory of manufacturer-approved axle grease.

Symptoms of Blown Bearings and Races for Heavy-Duty Trailers

Excess Wheel Hub Heat

If your wheel hub begins to overheat, you may have a worn bearing. Bearings that are no longer able to facilitate frictionless movement will put out a lot of heat, and you’ll be able to feel that through your wheel hub. Do keep in mind that wheel hubs will always be warm, as it’s impossible to remove 100% of the friction produced by your axle, but anything that’s uncomfortable to touch is a warning sign.

Wheel Hub Movement

While your wheel is suspended in the air, attempt to move it back and forth. If it moves against your wheel hub, you may have a blown bearing. When bearings fail, your wheel hub will no longer be securely mounted to your axle and, as such, the structural integrity of your drivetrain becomes compromised.

Visible Grease Leakage

If there is axle grease on your rim, wheel hub, or any other component located close to your axle, we highly recommend coming in for service right away. Leaking grease usually means your axle seals have failed, which in turn will result in excess friction.
