There are a variety of different types of fan clutches, but at the end of the day, they’re all responsible for the same thing. Engaging and disengaging your cooling fan! Some are electronic, whereas others are thermodynamic, and they all have the potential to fail! Unfortunately, malfunctioning fan clutches are widely regarded as being one of the primary causes of overheating in heavy-duty semi-trucks.
When a fan clutch malfunctions, it may fail to engage your cooling fan which will in turn cause your engine to overheat. On the other hand, if it fails to disengage your cooling, you may notice that your engine has trouble starting and will likely hear an endless droning sound.
Your radiator is designed to allow cold air to pass over coolant that’s absorbed a lot of radiant heat. If the passageways within your radiator are clogged, an insufficient amount of radiant heat will be dispersed, and your engine will overheat. Clogs typically happen as a result of old and broken-down coolant. For those unaware, coolant will break down and leave debris behind if it’s not changed on a regular basis. At DT Services, we’ll flush out your radiator and add new coolant!
If you’re not sure why your engine is overheating, come visit our shop. We’ll do the full rundown on your heavy-duty truck's coolant system and determine what’s causing your engine to overheat. At that point, we will repair the issue and get you back on the road.
